The Phoenix track and field teams made some serious noise at the Skyline Conference Meet in Klamath Falls last weekend. The Pirates boys finished an impressive second in the five-team event, scoring 146 points. Meanwhile, the PHS girls were fourth but only 11.5 points out of second. Henley won both team titles. Phoenix was equally as impressive individually as 10 Pirates are heading to the OSAA State Track and Field Meet in Eugene on May 26-27. The group will compete at venerable Hayward Field, one of the world's top facilities and home to the US Olympic Trials among other marquee events. Senior Kyla Potratz earned a pair of titles, winning both the 1500- and 3000-meter runs. Potratz outran Isabela Coffman of Klamath Union for both victories. Last fall's 4A cross country champion, Potratz wasn't the only Pirate to qualify in multiple events. Junior Kael Feeley also doubled in the distances, winning the 3000 on Friday before placing second in the 1500 on Saturday afternoon. Also on the track, junior Nathan Faulkner impressed, finishing second in the 200 to qualify for State. Faulkner and teammates Jackson Selden, Kody Martin and Eli Cruise roared to a second-place finish in the 400-meter relay to earn their state spot. Junior Orlando Contreras led a big point barrage in the 800. Contreras finished second while classmate Jacob Moody was third and freshman Ethan Dobbins sixth. Phoenix also qualified multiple athletes in field events. Junior Cash Stallsworth led the way, winning the discus while finishing second in the shot put. Stallsworth was in fifth place in the shot put before coming up big in his final throw to move up to second place. Senior Citlali Ramos set a personal record in the pole vault, clearing 8-foot-5 to place second. Underclassmen are also part of the state scene. Sophomore Brayden Decker dueled with Klamath Union's DayQuan McKay on a sun-soaked Saturday afternoon. Decker won the high jump in a "jump off", clearing a personal record 6-3 in the process. Meanwhile, freshman Eli Palmer was a strong second in the javelin, coming up 2.5 inches short of a victory in earning his state spot. There were plenty of "ups" for the Phoenix softball team during its 2023 pre-season. The Pirates, who enter Skyline Conference play ranked 13th in the state, posted a 7-4 mark through the first part of the season. The highlight was a four-game sweep of a round-robin event in Newport over spring break as Phoenix grabbed all of its wins over fellow 4A schools. Both offense and defense have been eventful for Phoenix. The Pirates generated 122 pre-season runs. A deep pitching staff surrendered 80 as four different players worked on the mound. Freshman Destiny Christlieb leads the pitching staff while juniors Jayden Vos and Kendall Haywood have also worked as well as freshman Keelie Woodside. Vos anchors the infield at shortstop and is joined by returners starters (both seniors) Paityn Croy at third base and Morgan James at second. Chrislieb plays first base when not on the mound, as does Heywood, who also works at shorstop. Junior Addie Bright returns at catcher, bringing solid defense and a reliable bat. Woodside, junior Violet Harper and sophomores Carsyn Gallegos and Sylvia Platt are all logging time in the in the outfield. The Pirates open Skyline Conference play with a three-game series against defense champion Henley. Interview with Coach Kevin Scoggins ...
