Skyline honors fall sports athletes

The accomplishments of Phoenix High School athletes were honored in the recent selection of All-Skyline Conference teams in fall sports.

In boys’ soccer, a long list of Pirates were honored after another successful season. Victor Martinez led the way, earning his third Skyline Player of the Year Award. Martinez top the team in scoring as the Pirates earned a spot in the state quarterfinals. First-team choices from Phoenix included seniors Jorge Mejia and Caden Gallegos, who joined Martinez to form a formidable offensive trio. Defensive stalwarts Tucker Speaks (senior) and Danny Palomino (junior) joined them on the first team. Speaks anchored the defense in goal for the past four seasons. Junior Jenner Seldon and sophomore Dominic Crenshaw were second-team choices while seniors Sergio Alegria and Reif  Stanfield were honorable mention selections.

In cross country, placement at the Skyline and OSAA state meets determined all-conference and all-state honors. Elwood Hosking won the Skyline meet and finished third at state. He was joined on the Skyline first team by sophomore Cael Feeley. Junior Marcelo Camargo-Berry was a second-team honoree for the boys. On the girls’ side, Kyla Potratz (junior) and Sophia Stubblefield (senior) were both first-team all-conference and all-state. Sophomores Ava Robinson and Brisa Bauer were second-team all-Skyline.

In volleyball, Ami Safady earned a spot on the first team. Safady led the Pirates in blocking as a junior and leads a long list of returners for the Pirates next fall. Departing senior Raelyssa Goff was an all-defensive team selection for the Pirates after finishing an impressive four-year career on the varsity level. Goff was Phoenix’s libero. Seniors Ally Ellis and Veronica Ascenciion and freshman Ariah Potts were honorable mention selections from PHS.

In football, four Pirates made the honorable mention list. Lineman Romi Pulido (senior) and receivers Trevor Sharrar (senior) and Jackson Seldon (junior) were offensive honorees while linebacker Jackson Shilts (sophomore) and defensive back Seldon made the list on defense.

In girls’ soccer, Sofia Rodriguez earned a second-team selection. A junior, Rodriguez was among the top scorers on the team. Senior Mady Mayer, juniors Morgan James and Ruby Rector and freshman Carsyn Gallegos were all honorable mention choices.
