Surging wrestlers lead Skyline

Game Date
Jan 12, 2019

The Phoenix wrestling team is sending a message to the rest of the Skyline Conference…beware!!!!

That message has been communicated often over the past few weeks as the Pirates get ready for the meat of their season. Saturday, part of the PHS team was in action at a tournament in Sutherlin. Emma Treux scored two pins and a technical fall to win the 125-128 pound girls’ division. Teammate  Bella Lucia was third in her division.

Patrick Calhoun placed second and Tommy Walker third in JV action while Joey Wilson placed fourth at 160 pounds to lead the varsity competitors.

Last Wednesday at Mazama, Phoenix went 3-0 at the first night of the Skyline Duals, beating Henley 54-30, Hidden Valley 48-30 and Klamath Union 66-9 while racking up 22 pins.

Host Mazama edged Phoenix in the final team points tally, 182-168, while Henley came in third with 123 and Hidden Valley fourth with 52.

Phoenix’s Emma Truex (126) and Jacky Hawkins (145) both earned three pins apiece. The conference dual season will conclude on January 30 at North Valley.

The Pirates kicked off 2019 with a busy agenda, taking part in a dual at Ashland before heading to both the Redding area and Eagle Point for tournament action. In Redding, Jacky Hawkins finished second, Ezra DeLuca third, Micheal Walker fourth and Joey Wilson sixth.

At Ashland, PHS rolled to a 51-6 dual win over the host Grizzlies. Truex, Bruce Doke, Elijah Leonis, Hawkins, Walker, Wilson, Sam Brumble, Elijah Galatioto and Ryan Brumble all recorded wins in the team victory.

The Pirates will head to the Oregon Classic in Redmond this weekend.
