The Phoenix baseball team is back in the OSAA tournament after a thrilling 4-3 win over Marist Catholic on Wednesday at Colver Field.
The Pirates pushed home a run in the bottom of the eighth inning to edge the Spartans in a Class 4A play-in game. The victory advances Phoenix to the first round of the OSAA playoffs, which open on Wednesday in Junction City. First pitch is 4:30 pm.
After taking an early lead, the Pirates found themselves in a 3-3 deadlock after seven innings. Three extra-inning singles provided the difference. AJ Stanfield and Mason Stella both reached base before Stanfield came home on a Kade Beer single to win the game.
Liam Serean and Freedom Marteinz combined to strike out 12 in the win. Serean fanned nine in six strong innings of work before Martinez worked a scoreless seventh and eighth inning. Stanfield and Stella both finished with two hits.
