The Phoenix boys' soccer team passed its first test of the 2019 OSAA playoffs.
Fueled by a Miguel Conchas goal midway through the first half, the Pirates blanked visiting Seaside 1-0 in a 4A playoff game at Colver Field on Wednesday afternoon.
PHS overcame a slow start and dominated the game, piling up a 12-5 advantage in shots on goal. Sophomore all-state forward Victor Martinez supplied the majority of the pressure, unleashing seven shots on the day.
But it was Conchas who found the goal, turning on a loose ball outside of the box and sending a rocket into the right corner of the goal.
Randy Rodriguez and Dan Martinez anchored a solid Phoenix defense, supporting the clean sheet that sophomore goalie Tucker Speaks put together.
Fourth-ranked Phoenix (12-1-2 on the season) returns to action on Saturday, hosting No. 5 Stayton in a 1 pm kickoff at Colver Field.
