After fighting back throughout the season, the Phoenix boys’ basketball team ran out of punches on Saturday night.
The Pirates battled throughout a memorable state playoff game at Philomath, only to drop a 48-45 decision.
After trailing by as many as eight points early in the third quarter, the back-and-forth contest saw Phoenix leading 45-42 with just under three minutes to play. A couple near-misses by the Pirates opened the door for Philomath, which used its size advantage to create additional possessions throughout the game, including in the closing minutes.
Phoenix (14-11 on the season) got 11 points from Ethan Hutsell. Along with Hutsell, other seniors playing their final game for the Pirates included AJ Stanfield, Logan Jenkins, Nik Goff, Ty Clayton, Braeden Watts and Nico Ortega.
