Impressive runs at Skyline XC

Phoenix qualified a team for the state meet in addition to crowning a pair of individual champions at Wednesday's Skyline Conference Cross Country Meet.

The Pirates impressed on the hilly course at Steens Sports Park as the girls' team finished second to punch a return ticket to State. Kyla Portatz repeated at the individual girls' champion in the process. The junior covered the course in 20:55.80, 13 seconds faster than the closest finisher.

Sophia  Stubblefield was third in 21:31.43, Ava Robinson 12th in 23:51.84, Brisa Bauer 13th in 23:55.42, Heidi Taylor 16th in 24:11.51, Agatha Hosking 24th in 28:21.19 and Ellie DeMello 26th in 20:02.27.

Meanwhile, the Pirate were boys were a mere four points out of second place and a trip to State. Elwood Hosking set the pace for Phoenix, winning the boys' race in 17:11.83 to punch his return ticket to State, which will be held at Lane Community College in Eugene on Nov. 6.

Kael Feeley finished sixth in the boys' event, just one spot out of an automatic qualifier position. The sophomore posted a time of 18:47.55 and earned first-team all-conference honors in the process.

Marcelo Carmargo-Berry was 14th (19:32.98), good for spot on the all-conference second team. Other PHS finishers included Stone Lecroy in 18th (19:59.76), Orlando Contreras in 23rd (20:19.52), Adriel Gamez 29th (21:46.25) and Angel Ramirez-Rojas 30th (22:24.30).
