For the Phoenix boys' soccer team, the season had to come to an end at some point in time. Unfortunately for the Pirates, it happened in the toughest of ways.

After playing 100 scoreless minutes on the field, a 4A State Quarterfinal contest against North Marion came down to penalty kicks on Saturday night. The visiting Huskies found the net one more time than the Pirates, resulting in a 4-3 advantage that gets recorded as a 1-0 victory.

Either way, Phoenix's memorable season came to a conclusion with a 13-3 record. Meanwhile, North Marion advanced to Tuesday's quarterfinals where it will take on Philomath.

Both teams had numerous chances to score in regulation and the pair of 10-minute overtime periods. The host Pirates made runs throughout the night, crossing the ball in front of the goal but not being able to find the net. Meanwhile, North Marion's best chance came on several lobs that Phoenix goalie Tucker Speaks either knocked away or just went over the net.

Sergio Alegria, Danny Palomino and Victor Martinez converted their penalty kicks for the three Pirate goals. North Marion scored four straight after Speaks stopped the first shot.
