The Phoenix wrestling team is ready to turn up the heat.
The Pirates have a pair of early-season meets under their belt as they prepare for the meat of their schedule beginning in early January when they'll compete in numerous tournaments and dual events.
Phoenix opened the season on December 3, hosting the annual Harry Mondale Memorial event. The seven-team event did not track team scores. Erik Reyes (132 pounds) and Owen Mathewson (160) both finished third in their respective weight classes.
The other event PHS took part in was the Grants Pass Kickoff Tournament on December 17-18. Joey Baynard won the 220-pound weight class in the 17-team tournament while Marcelo Camargo finished third at 170 pounds. Baynard scored a 13-8 win over Mazama's Tyson Gastel in the championship match.
The Pirates return to action on January 5 when they'll take part in a meet at Ashland.
