The Phoenix boys' soccer team opened its annual "gauntlet" last week, turning in a solid result.

The Pirates challenging non-conference schedule got underway on August 30 with a challenging "friendly" against rival North Medford. While the Black Tornado scored a 1-0 win, Phoenix showed it can play up in hanging with a program that draws from three times as many students as PHS.

North broke a scoreless tie with a goal midway through the second half. Julius Bolstad made his varsity debut in goal, turning back a variety of shots before the lone goal of the match.

Danny Palomino paced the defensive effort with a strong midfield game while Jenner Selden created a variety of scoring opportunities. Palomino, Selden and Bolstad are all seniors on the team.

Phoenix was scheduled to return to action on Friday before its' match at Grants Pass was postponed due to air quality issues. The Pirates will resume play on Tuesday when they host Eagle Point in a 6 pm friendly at P-T Rising Field at Jack Woodward Stadium.
