Grace sets school javelin mark

Joseph Grace went deep on Friday at the Wally Ciochetti Invitational in Cottage Grove.

The Phoenix High School senior broke the school record in the javelin with a heave of 168-feet-11 inches. The effort earned Grace third-place in the high-powered event, which was won by Ty Hampton of North Bend with a best of 205-2. Grace broke Zachary Smith's 2008 school record of 168-8.

Other top performances for the Pirates included Noah Marshall winning the boys' 800-meter run in 2:00.64 (personal best) and Lupita Alegria taking honors in the girls' 800 in a personal best 2:25.39. Sienna Bauer won the 100 hurdles in 15.73 seconds while finishing third in the 100 in 13.07. Sophia Stubblefield was second in the 1500 (personal best 4:59.50). Cristal Tellez added a pair of eighth-place finishes (shot put and javelin) and a ninth (discus).

The meet concluded the regular season for the Pirates, who will take part in the Skyline Conference meet on Friday and Saturday at North Valley High School in Merlin.
