A third-place finish as a team and moving eight wrestlers through to the OSAA State Tournament made for a good weekend for the Phoenix High School wrestling team.

While defending state champion Emma Truex had qualified for a return trip to Portland a week earlier, the rest of the Pirate contingent got after it over two days at the District 3 Tournament at Hidden Valley High School.

Five PHS wrestlers finished int he top three of their weight class. Ezra DeLuca led the way, placing second at 113 pounds. Third-place finishers from Phoenix included Jacky Hawkins (138), Dalton Samis (145), Elijah Santana (152) and Joey Wilson 170. Elijah Galatioto (170), Dane Johnson (182) and Ishmael DeLaTorre (285) also earned state spots.

As a team, the Pirates compiled 193.5 points in the 12-team event, which was won by Marshfield.

The OSAA State Tournament begins Friday morning at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Portland.
