Elwood Hosking meant business on Friday at the Crater Track Twilight.
The Phoenix senior set a new school record in the 5000 meters, covering the course in 15:32.90 as the Pirates finished sixth as a team in the mostly big-school event. Hosking was fifth overall in the race.
Hosking is one of only three Pirates to have ever run under 15:40 in the 5K. Elliot Jantzer held the previous mark of 15:33 (run in 2007). Damian Boldovino was the other (15:38).
Other varsity finishers for the Phoenix boys included Kael Feeley in 32nd (17:45), Marcelo Carmargo-Berry in 41st (18;16), Adriel Gamez in 70th (19:51.30) and Angel Ramirez-Rojas in 77th (20:40.90).
Meanwhile, the Phoenix girls finished fourth as a team and were just two points behind Skyline Conference foe Klamath Union for third place. Sophia Stubblefield was second overall (19:01), Kyla Potratz third (19:02), Ava Robinson 22nd (21:36), Brisa Bauer 25th (22:27) and Heidi Taylor 26th (22:44) to round out the scoring for the Pirates, who return to action Wednesday at the Max King Invitational at the Jackson County Expo.
