The dawn of a new school year -- and sports seasons -- has arrived at Phoenix High School.
While classes won't start for a few more weeks, preparation for fall sports will get underway on Monday, August 14...the first official day of practice. PHS will field teams in soccer, football, volleyball and cross country as well as a cheerleading squad this fall. Practices will be held at PHS as well as Colver Field (soccer) in nearby talent.
Robin Apkan is the Pirates' newest varsity coach this fall and will lead the school's volleyball program. Returning coaches include Dennis Flenner (boys' soccer), Stephanie Vandenbusch (girls' soccer), John Cornet (cross country), Jered Gail (football) and Rachelle Farley (cheer).
Dave Ehrhardt is the school's new athletic director, replacing Toby Walker, who has moved into the role of assistant principal. Don Rugraff is back for his second year as the school's principal.
Student-athletes are reminded that they must have clearance through the athletic department to participate in practices. Physicals are mandated for incoming freshmen and juniors. All student-athletes must provide proof of insurance. Participation fee is $75 per student.
