A long list of Phoenix High School players, as well as coaches, earned Skyline Conference all-star honors during the 2017 fall sports season.
The Pirates were well-represented on all of the all-star teams. PHS football, which won a share of the Skyline title, had the co-player of the year offense in senior quarterback Javan Gail. The Pirates finished with a 7-3 mark, advancing to the first round of the Class 4A playoffs with Gail leading the surge. His favorite target, wide receiver Chase Courtney, was a first-team selection on offense and at defensive back.
Other first-team choices from Phoenix included Ismael DeLaTorre on both the offensive and defensive lines, Jonathan Halligan at tight end and Mason Firestone at linebacker. Like Courtney and Gail, all three players are seniors.
Seniors Matt Saurman (offensive line), Halligan (defensive line), Courtney (punter) and Gail (defensive back) were all second-team selections while junior Jacky Hawkins (receiver) and sophomore Micheal Walker (running back) were also second-team choices.
Honorable mention choices from Phoenix included Julian Peltier (linebacker), Ryan Brumble (offensive line), Seth Firestone (defensive line), Dalton Samis (linebacker), Brandon Brumble (defensive back), Mason Firestone (running back), Nik Goff (receiver) and Joey Price (offensive line).
Pirate coach Jered Gail shared Coach of the Year honors with Alex Stork of Henley. Phoenix, Henley and Mazama shared the conference championship.
In girls’ soccer, the Pirates had a first-team selection in Maggie Carrillo. The junior helped her team break a seven-year losing streak in league play and led the team in scoring. Maegan Farley (senior) was a second-team selection from PHS while Liliana Mejia (senior) and Lupita Alegria (junior) were both honorable mention selections. The Pirates were 1-9 in conference play and 3-10 overall.
In boys’ soccer, Phoenix landed a pair of first-team spots with seniors Kassem Akil and Giovanni Cook and junior Bryson Flenner earning honors for a team that won the Skyline and finished with an overall record of 8-4-2, advancing to the OSAA playoffs in the process. Sergio Urena (senior) and Alex Salcido (junior) were second-team selections junior Joe Navas was honorable mention. Dennis Flenner was voted the conference’s Coach of the Year.
In volleyball, Pirate senior Kassidy Calhoun was a second-team selection. Calhoun and the Pirates finished tied for third in Skyline play. Honorable mention choices from Phoenix included senior Avery Reneau along with juniors Sophia Tringolo and Katelyn Hanson.
