After three weeks of practices, many of them inside due to poor air quality, Phoenix High School’s fall sports teams are ready to debut.
The Pirates’ three volleyball teams will be the first in action, hosting South Medford and Marshfield beginning at 3 pm today in both gyms at PHS. Coach Robin Akpan and her varsity team are set to compete for an OSAA playoff spot after narrowly missing the post-season in 2017.
Pirate football is set to open on Friday night when it hosts Cascade Christian in a 7 pm start at Jack Woodward Stadium. Phoenix won a share of the Skyline Conference championship last season and advanced to the first round of the OSAA playoffs. Coach Jered Gail returns starters on both sides of the ball as PHS prepares to take on one of the state’s toughest schedules.
Cross country will head to Redding, CA on Friday where it will take part in the Bill Springhorn Classic at Shasta College. Over 40 PHS student-athletes comprise coach John Cornet’s 2018 team.
Boys’ soccer will open the season Saturday at Valley Catholic in Beaverton. Coach Dennis Flenner is back for his 24th season at the helm after winning the Skyline title and advancing to the OSAA Round of 16 last season.
Girls’ soccer will get the season underway on Tuesday, September 4 when it tangles with Crater at Colver Field in Talent. Coach Stephanie Vandenbusch and her team are looking to climb in the Skyline standings after finishing 1-9 last season.
