A short season didn’t mean that Phoenix High School’s fall sports athletes were short on honors.

A Skyline Conference title and second-place finish in the 4A State Tournament helped propel of long list of Phoenix boys’ soccer players to honors. Junior Victor Martinez earned player of the year honors for the second time in his high school career while Chris Gallegos was named the Skyline’s coach of the year. Other PHS first-teamers included juniors Jorge Mejia and Caden Gallegos. Danny Palomino (sophomore) and Roberto Hernandez (sophomore) were second-team choices hwile Yahir Valdovinos (senior) and Tucker Speaks (junior) were both named honorable mention.

Phoenix cross country had a big spring season, with a long of athletes earning honors at the conference and state levels. Sophomore Kyla Potratz was the Skyline Champion and earned second-team all-state honors. Junior Sophia Stubblefield and freshman Ava Robinson were also first-team Skyline selections while senior Fatima Flores was second team. For the Pirate boys, Elwood Hosking (junior) was first team while Dilan Mathieu (senior), Noah Marshall (senior) and Orlando Contreras were all second-team honorees. Pirate coach John Cornet was the Skyline girls’ coach of the year. Hosking was second-team all-state and Marshall third team while Stubblefield earned third-team honors at the state level for the girls.

In volleyball, hitter Josie Bolstad (senior) was a repeat first-team selection. Junior Raelyssa Goff was an all-defensive team choice. Senior Delani Parent and juniors Ally Ellis and Madison Lewis were honorable mention choices.

In girls’ soccer, senior Alexsandra Hernandez was a second-team selection for Phoenix. Teammates Madelyn Mayer (junior) and sophomores Morgan James and Ruby Rector were honorable mention choices.

Pirate football landed three players on the honorable mention list. The group included defensive lineman Kyle Braun (senior) and  Trevor Sharrar (junior) as well as sophomore linebacker Jair Ramirez. PHS coach Dave Johnson was voted co-coach of the year.
