The Phoenix varsity baseball and softball teams both earned post-season opportunities.
Both Pirate teams will compete on Saturday, May 20, making considerable trips in their quest to earn a spot in the OSAA State Tournament. Baseball visits Stayton High School while softball heads to the eastern reaches of the state and will match up with Ontario.
The PHS baseball team takes a 10-12 record to the game at Stayton. The Pirates are ranked 23rd in the state after a late-season reversal of fortunes which saw them pick up three forfeit wins after Skyline Conference member Mazama had to vacate all but one of its victories on the season for using an ineligible player. Phoenix solidified its spot in the rankings with a 3-2 win at Hidden Valley on May 13. Meanwhile, Stayton is ranked ninth int he state and is 15-8 overall.
Game time is set for 12:30 pm at Stayton High School.
Meanwhile, the Pirate softball team will take a 10-13 overall record and the 17th spot in the state rankings out east when it visits Ontario. The host Tigers are ranked 16th and also own a 10-13 overall mark. Phoenix finished 3-9 in the Skyline Conference while Ontario put together a 3-9 mark in the Skyline.
The teams will square off at Treasure Valley Community College in Ontario. Game time is set for 11 am (PST).
Ironically, Phoenix played Ontario for the 4A state boys' soccer championship last fall while squaring off with Stayton in the 2020 title game.
Winners of Saturday's games will advance to the OSAA State Tournament which will get underway on Tuesday around the state.
