The Phoenix softball team is getting things rolling at the right time of the season.
The Pirates improved to 5-6 overall and 2-3 in the Skyline Conference with a 19-7 win over visiting Mazama on Tuesday afternoon. Keelie Woodside picked up the win while Kendall Heywood homered among her three hits and drove in four runs. The game was tied at 5-5 before PHS pulled away.
Woodside shares pitching duties with senior Jayden Vos and sophomore Destiny Christlieb. When not on the mound, Christlieb and Woodside both work at third base while Vos is a four-year starter at shortstop. Sophomore Riley Johnson plays second base or shortstop while Heywood plays primarily first base but can also pitch. Senior Addie Brite catches while junior Alivia Kruse also logging time at catcher.
Senior Violet Harper, junior Carsyn Gallegos and senior Julie Johnson make up the outfield. Sophomores Charlotte Thull and Emily Strong and junior Katie Bowling are also working in the outfield while junior Sylvia Platt plays both infield and outfield.
Tuesday's win was the third in four games for Phoenix. The Pirates host Mazama again on Thursday before entertaining Hidden Valley for a doubleheader on Saturday. All PHS home games are played at Colver Field (6100 Colver Road in Talent).
