A trip to the far reaches of Oregon proved successful for the Phoenix High School baseball team.
The Pirates improved to 4-3 in the pre-season with a pair of wins in play in John Day over spring break. PHS split a pair of games with Ontario and rolled past Burns on the three-day trip.
Saturday's 10-9 win over Ontario avenged a 10-2 loss to the Tigers two days earlier. Jonathan Halligan provided a clutch pinch hit, lacing a bases-clearing triple in the bottom of the seventh inning to tie ghe game at 9-9. After Ontario intentionally walked two batters to re-load the bases, Halligan scored to win the game after Kade Beer was walked. Phoenix entered the final inning trailing 9-5 before staging its game-winning comeback.
Stella and Watts both collected three of Phoenix's 10 hits in the game. Liam Serean picked up the win in relief.
A day earlier, the Pirates scored eight times in the first two innings of the big win over Burns. Freshman Ethan Humble was the winning pitcher, Dylan Knudson and Braeden Watts both had three hits while Chase Courtney and Nik Goff added two apiece.
