With a big week ahead, the Phoenix baseball team needed a big rally on Friday afternoon.
After dropping the first game in a three-game series with Mazama on Wednesday, the Pirates found themselves trailing 6-4 entering the final inning of the first game of a Skyline Conference doubleheader with the Vikings at Colver Field on Friday afternoon. With defending conference champion Henley on the docket for three games this week, Phoenix needed a surge in a big way.
The Pirates got just that as they came up with three runs in the top of the seventh inning to edge the Vikings 7-6. A 9-1 loss in the nightcap left Phoenix at 4-2 in league play entering the Henley series, which begins on Wednesday with a single game at Colver Field.
Chase Courtney's walk-off RBI single capped off the rally, which also included hits by Jonathan Halligan, Braeden Watts and Liam Serean. Mason Stella was the winning pitcher in relief of Freedom Martinez. Serean also doubled for Phoenix, which is 11-5 overall.
In the second game, the Pirates were limited to five hits. Dylan Knudson, Kade Beer and Serean all pitched for the Pirates.
