A near-miss has the Phoenix baseball team with its back against the wall.
The Pirates nearly knocked off state and Skyline Conference power Henley in the first game of a doubleheader in Klamath Falls on Monday. Leading 5-1 in the sixth inning, the Pirates eventually dropped a 6-5 decision in the first game of the doubleheader which was rained out on Saturday.
Henley dominated the second game 13-3 to complete the sweep.
The losses leave the Pirates 4-5 in the Skyline and in fourth place. The top three teams in the conference will automatically make the Class 4A post-season later this month. The Pirates are ranked 16th in the state, which will likely get them in as an extra qualifier but would prefer a guarantee.
PHS is 11-8 overall heading into a three-game series against Hidden Valley, which opens on Wednesday at 5 pm at Colver Field.
