First blood in a big late-season series went to Hidden Valley on Wednesday afternoon.
The visiting Mustangs downed Phoenix 6-3 in a Skyline Conference game at Colver Field. PHS is 4-6 in league play after the loss and 11-9 overall.
Ethan Humble pitched into the seventh inning. The freshmen turned in another solid effort, striking out three in the process.
Phoenix led 3-1 thanks to RBI singles from Colton Merriman and Chase Courtney in the second inning. The Pirates maintained that lead until the fifth inning when Kolton Fisher unloaded the bases with a long home run off Humble.
Brennan Watts finished with two of the seven Phoenix hits in the game.
The series resumes on Saturday with a doubleheader in Murphy.
