Game Date
May 5, 2018
Score
PIRATE: 7
HIDDEN VALLEY: 4

Just when it appeared to be on life-support, the Phoenix baseball team revived its season on Saturday afternoon.

The Pirates were trailed host Hidden Valley 6-0 entering the final inning of the opening game of a Skyline Conference doubleheader in Murphy. After losing to the Mustangs on Wednesday, the Pirates were looking for some sort of spark. Eight runs later, they had it!

Down to its final out, Phoenix pounded Mustang pitching in the final frame. Kade Beer and Chase Courtney both drove in two runs with singles in the surge while Kevin Botermans added an RBI single. Mason Stella pitched a scoreless seventh inning for the save. He took over for Freedom Martinez, who scattered six hits over six innings to earn the win. HV scored all of its runs in the third inning before Martinez and Stella combined for a shutout the rest of the way.

The Pirates followed up with a 7-4 triumph in the nightcap. After ending a school-record 16-game Hidden Valley winning streak in the opener scored three times in the first inning and never looked back. Beer, Liam Serean and Stella combined to stop the Mustangs on three hits. Courtney and Brennan Watts both had two hits for the Pirates.

The wins moved Phoenix to 13-9 overall and 6-6 in conference play heading into a three-game series against Klamath Union this week. The Pirates jumped past Mazama into third place are improved their RPI to 13th in the state with the sweep.
