It took an extra inning for the Phoenix baseball team to earn an opening-day victory on Tuesday as the Pirates nipped Sutherlin 4-3 in eight innings in a non-conference game at US Cellular Fields in Medford.
AJ Stanfield walked and eventually scored the break the tie. Braeden Watts moved him to second base with a sacrifice bunt before sophomore Brandon Zanni turned in an impressive effort by fouling three two-strike pitches to set up a pair of wild pitches that eventually scored Stanfield for the win.
Liam Serean and Colton Merriman both had hits for Phoenix, which hosts Douglas on Thursday afternoon at Covler Field. Freedom Martinez started and pitched four scoreless innings, striking out six in the process. Mason Stella and Ethan Humble also pitched for Phoenix, with Humble notching the win.
