The Phoenix baseball team is putting itself in prime position for the post-season!
The Pirates split a pair of games with Hidden Valley on Saturday, jumping up to 11th in the state's computer rankings. HV came into the day 20-1 on the season.
PHS took the opener of the Skyline Conference doubleheader, downing the Mustangs 6-2. Liam Serean struck out eiight and scattered six hits in the opener. The senior has allowed only one earned run in conference play and kept the Mustangs at bay throughout the first game. He picked up all the support he needed early in the contest as Phoenix scored twice in the second and third innings. Freedom Martinez singled home the runs in the second while Kade Beer provided a two-run single in the third. Both seniors along with sophomore Brandon Zanni had two hits in the game.
The Pirates overcame an early deficit in the nightcap and led 5-3 after six innings before Hidden Valley plated four runs in the seventh and held on to win and salvage a split of the day. Martinez pitched a solid game, allowing eight hits. The Pirates totaled nine hits but were hampered by three errors in the contest.
Phoenix is 6-6 in Skyline play and 12-11 overall. The Pirates take on Klamath Union to close the regular season this week, including a single game for Senior Day on Wednesday. First pitch is at 5 pm at Colver Field.
