Offensively, the Phoenix softball team was in mid-season form on Saturday.
The Pirates scored 33 runs and hammered out 30 hits in a season-opening split of single games in Sutherlin. PHS dropped a 14-13 decision in the opener to Sutherlin before rolling past Douglas 20-7.
Sutherlin came up with three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to win a back-and-forth contest with PHS. Makenna Page collected four hits and Katelyn Hanson three in the opener for Phoenix. They both drove in runs in the top of the seventh to stake the Pirates to a 12-1-0 lead. Sutherlin responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning to win the game.
A 14-run third inning took care of things in the second game as the Pirates invoked the 10-run rule after five innings. Brooke Kentner totalled three hits while Tattum Truex added two. Emma Truex scattered nine hits to pick up the win.
The Pirates return to action Wednesday, visiting Rogue River in a 4 pm game.
