After losing a close one in the opener, the Phoenix softball team took charge to earn a split of a doubleheader with Cascade Christian on Friday afternoon.
The Pirates fell 4-3 the first game before rolling past the Challengers 16-6 in the second game at US Cellular Fields. Wet grounds at Colver Fields forced the contests to be moved.
An eight-run first inning jump-started Phoenix in the nightcap. PHS scored in every inning and eventually brought the game to an end with three runs in the sixth inning to invoke the 10-run rule. Claire Mathewson and Katelyn Hanson shared the pitching duties in the win.
Phoenix totaled 14 hits in the game with Makenna Page, Halie Bowman and Hanson collecting three each.
Mathewson pitched the first game, allowing just six hits in the contest. Brooke Kentner doubled for one of the three Pirate hits in the game.
Phoenix returns to action Wednesday, visiting North Valley to open Skyline Conference play.
