A pair of fast starts weren't enough to hold off a tidal wave for the Phoenix softball team on Saturday afternoon.
The Pirates led visiting Mazama early in both games of a Skyline Conference doubleheader at Colver Field before eventually falling 17-9 and 19-7.
An 11-run fifth inning spelled the difference in the opener, wiping out a 9-2 Phoenix lead. PHS led 6-2 after three innings of the second game before Mazama scored 16 runs in the final three innings.
Halie Bowman led the Phoenix offense, hitting a two-run homer in each game. Claire Mathewson tripled twice in the opener. Mazama totalled 33 hits in the two games.
Phoenix (5-8 overall, 1-5 in the Skyline) returns to action Wednesday when it hosts Henley.
