The Phoenix softball team planted firmly back into the Skyline Conference race on Saturday.
After dropping two pivotal games at North Valley a week earlier, the Pirates pulled off an impressive sweep of a doubleheader at Mazama to even their conference mark at 3-3. Phoenix edged the host Vikings 10-9 in the first game before outslugging Mazama 18-15 in the nightcap, improving to 8-6 overall in the process.
Haley Bowman's bat propelled the Pirates to victory in the opener. The senior homered twice and drove in six runs, including a sixth-inning grand slam. Makenna Page finished with four hits in the opener while Raylyssa Goff earned the win with a complete-game effort.
Page's bat also proved pivotal in the nightcap as the senior infielder blasted a three-run homer in the seventh to break a 15-15 tie. Ashley Gurr finishing with five hits, including her first-ever home run, while Katelyn Hanson collected four of the Pirates' 22 hits in the game. Josie Bolstad, Maggie Carrillo and Bowman all added three hits. Claire Mathewson and Goff combined on the pitching victory.
The Pirates return to action Wednesday, traveling to Henley.
