Forty-nine runs on 42 hits...that's quite a day for the Phoenix softball team.
The Pirates closed the Skyline Conference season with a sweep of Klamath Union, pounding the Pelicans 26-2 and 23-0 in Klamath Falls on Saturday.
PHS improved to 13-10 overall and finished 8-7 in conference play. A final computer ranking of 18 advances the Pirates to the 4A play-in round where they will visit Cascade High School on Friday for a 4:30 battle, with the winner advancing to the OSAA Round of 16.
A 13-run second inning in the opener and a 10-run second inning in the nightcap put Saturday's games away early for Phoenix. Makenna Page totaled five hits, including a pair of doubles and a home run, in the first game while Rae Goff and Abi George added three hits each. Halie Bowman totalled three hits in the finale.
Claire Mathewson pitched a complete-game six-hitter in the opener before Goff checked KU on just one hit in the shutout during the finale.
