Solid track effort for Pirates at North Valley

The Phoenix High School track and field teams are starting to size up the Skyline Conference competition.

The Pirates had a prime opportunity on Wednesday when they took part in a four-team meet at North Valley High School in Merlin. Three of the four teams involved were from the conference, including perennial powerhouse Henley.

The Phoenix boys finished second in the team standings with 146 points. Meanwhle, the girls were third, totaling 118 points.

Cory Romig set the pace for the Phoenix boys, winning the 200 (24.36 seconds) while finishing second in the 100 and joining Adoniram Gamez, Cameron Cory and Joe Navas on the winning 4x100 relay team. Joseph Grace won the javelin (149-5). Henry Hewson (low hurdles) and Elijah Leonis (high hurdles) both finished third. Robby Vos was second and Noah Marshall third in the 800. PHS boys finished in four of the top six spots in the 200.

For the girls, the Pirates picked up wins in the 100 hurdles by Sienna Bauer (16.48), the 400 by Lupita Alegria (1:04.67) and the 4x100 relay team of Maggie Carrillo, Anna Nash, Bauer and Sophia Tringolo. Bauer added a second in the triple jump.

The Pirates return to action on Saturday when they will take part in meets in Douglas County.
