Pirates persevere through rainy Saturday

Game Date
Apr 7, 2018

A little, or maybe a lot of, rain couldn't slow down the Phoenix track and field teams in a pair of meets in Douglas County on Saturday.

The Pirates spent the day at both Douglas High School and Roseburg High School. The Roseburg meet was  mostly big schools at the Pepsi Big Foot Invitational. Meanwhile, smaller schools headed to the Petersen Memorial Meet at Douglas High in Winston.

At Roseburg, Sienna Bauer had another impressive day. The PHS sophomore placed second in the 100 hurdles, posting a time of 16.36 seconds. Bauer added a third-place finish in the triple jump with a best of 33-feet-3 inches.

Other finishes of note at Roseburg included Noah Marshall second in the afternoon finals of the 1500 (4:34.95), Sophia Tringolo eighth in the 100 hurdles (17.96), Bauer 12th in the long jump (15-4) and Anna Nash 13th in the long jump (15-3).

At Winston, the majority of the Pirates took part  in the annual Petersen meet. Both PHS finished fifth in team scoring. Justin Vermillion had the top boys' finish, placing second in the javelin with a personal best of 103-1. Elijah Leonis was third in the 110 hurdles (22.16) and fourth in the 300 hurdrles (53.72) while the 4x100 team of Henry Hewson, Joel Flores-Ortega, Kyle Cook and Shaun Felder were third.

Vivian Tauer placed second for the girls in the 1500 (6:50.75). Shelby Platt was third in the 800 (3:08.94), Lily Fjeldheim third in the 300 hurdles (1:01), Cristal Tellez third in the discus (68-5). The 4x100 (Fjeldheim, Fatima Flores, Payton Stamm and Karli Farrimond) and the 4x400 team (Platt, Tauer, Stamm and Farrimond) were both third.

The Pirates return to action on Friday at Klamath Union.
