The search for answers continues for the Phoenix football team.

After struggling to. move the ball a week earlier, the Pirates found success in the air during a non-conference game at Newport on Friday. Unfortunately, they struggled to establish a running game or stop the Cubs' offense in a 34-7 loss.

Quarterbacks Zach Dungey and Dalton Samis combined to throw for 199 yards in the contest. Jacky Hawkins caught seven passes for 93 yards. On the ground, PHS ran for minus-6 yards.

The Pirates had their best success moving the ball early in the game but were unable to score. Newport took a  14-0 lead into halftime before scoring to start the second half. Phoenix countered by getting on the scoreboard for the first time this season when Nik Goff brought the ensuing kickoff back 86 yards for a touchdown. Newport closed the game with two. more scoring drives.

Phoenix (0-2 on the season) returns home to host Sweet Home on Friday night. Kickoff is set for 7 pm at Woodward Stadium.
