While they weren't able to post a homecoming victory, the Phoenix football team proved it could compete on Friday night.
The Pirates were within a touchdown of visiting Cottage Grove in the third quarter before dropping a 41-14 non-conference decision at Jack Woodward Stadium. PHS trailed just 21-14 when Nik Goff took a Zach Dungey pass and found the end zone. The visiting Lions responded with three scores to put the game away.
Mateo Lopez scored the other Phoenix touchdown. The Pirates are 0-7 overall heading into Friday's season finale at home against North Valley.
