Defense led offense for the Phoenix boys' basketball team on Tuesday night.
The host Pirates recorded 32 deflections, many leading to steals and transition opportunities on the other end of the floor in a 54-34 non-conference win over Illinois Valley.
PHS led 28-15 at halftime and pulled away throughout the second half in its first game of the season. Eight players scored in the contest, led by sophomores Braeden Watts (13 points) and Ethan Hutsell (11 points). Brennan Watts added eight points while Kevin Botermans and David Lozano-Reyes added six each.
The Pirates return to action on Friday, visiting Sweet Home before taking on Elmira on Saturday.
