A pair of slow starts led to the downfall of the Phoenix boys' basketball team over the weekend.
The Pirates fell behind early in both games of a two-game trip to the Eugene area, dropping a 51-32 decision on Friday at Sweet Home and a 55-42 decision at Elmira on Saturday. The losses dropped PHS to 1-2 on the young season.
Phoenix fell behind 23-5 on Friday and 22-8 on Saturday. The Pirates played both teams nearly even over the final three quarters but never seriously threatened to get back in the games.
David Lozano Reyes scored a team-high 13 points in Friday's game at Sweet Home. Ethan Hutsell led PHS scorers with eight points on Saturday at Elmira.
The Pirates return to action on Tuesday, hosting North Bend.
