A chance to get off to a great start in the Skyline Conference was there for the taking on Tuesday night for the Phoenix boys' basketball team.
The Pirates were hitting shots on the offensive end while slowing down host Hidden Valley with their 1-3-1 defense before the tide turned in a 52-44 loss to the Mustangs in Murphy.
For a second time this season against Hidden Valley, PHS (3-11 overall) led throughout the first three quarters. Ball movement led to good shots that the Pirates were hitting. Eventually, HV switched to man-to-man defense, slowing the Phoenix offense. Meanwhile, the Hidden Valley offense found its groove, scoring 23 points in the final quarter to pull away for the win.
Ethan Hutsell scored 12 points while David Lozano-Reyes and Braeden Watts added nine each for the Pirates, who host North Valley on Friday night.
