It took some time, but eventually the Phoenix boys' basketball team created some distance between itself and Illinois Valley on Thursday night.
Tied at halftime, the Pirates used a strong second half on the way to a 75-63 non-conference win in Cave Junction in a season-opener for both teams.
Phoenix outscored IV 46-34 in the second half. Ethan Hutsell had a big second half, scoring 14 of his 19 points. Braeden Watts led all scorers with 26 points while Neco Ortega added 16 in his first game for Phoenix. AJ Stanfield chipped in a strong performance off the bench, finishing with six points.
The Pirates return to action Tuesday, hosting Eagle Point.
