Pirates win own Shootout

The Phoenix boys' basketball team took their own Shootout to extremes on Saturday afternoon.
The Pirates connected 10 times form three-point range in an impressive 63-60 win over St. Mary's in the finals of the Pirate Shootout at PHS.
Phoenix (3-1 on the season) led the entire game before withstanding a St. Mary's rally in the final eight minutes.
Braeden Watts hit four times from three-point range on the way to a game-high 18 points. Neco Ortega connected on a trio of three-point baskets and scored 16 points while Ethan Hutsell added 11. In all, eight Pirates scored in the victory.
Phoenix advanced to the championship with an 82-42 win over Rogue River on Friday night. PHS scored 33 points in the second quarter, opening a 52-20 halftime lead. Watts scored 21 points and Hutsell 18. The Pirates were 23 for 31 from the free throw line in the game.
Phoenix returns to action Thursday when it opens play in the Evergreen Bank Holiday Classic at Hidden Valley High School.
