After a rough start, the Phoenix boys' basketball team bounced back nicely at the Subaru Holiday Classic.
The Pirates were overrun by 3A power Dayton, falling 58-22 in an opening-round game on Thursday. Dayton led 44-11 at halftime. Braeden Watts led Phoenix with nine points while Neco Ortega added eight.
Friday, Phoenix got back on track, downing St. Mary's 66-53. The victory was the third of the season for PHS (9-3 on the season) over the Crusaders. Ethan Hutsell scored 22 points and AJ Stanfield 13 for Phoenix. Hutsell scored 12 points in a 20-point second quarter for the Pirates.
Saturday, Phoenix wrapped up the tournament with a 47-40 win over host Cascade Christian. Hutsell led the way with 23 points while Watts added 14.
The Pirates return to action on Friday when they take on Elmira at Cottage Grove in a Skyline-Sky Em Crossover game.
