An opportunity to start the Skyline Conference off on a winning note was left on the court for the Phoenix boys’ basketball team on Thursday night.
The Pirates were never able to shake visiting North Valley, dropping a 44-40 decision to the Knights in the conference opener for both teams at PHS.
North Valley broke from a 21-21 halftime tie to take a 33-29 lead after three quarters. The game remained close throughout the final eight minutes. NV led by as many as seven points in the final quarter before Neco Ortega’s three-point basket in the final minute close the deficit to one. Phoenix trailed by three points in the closing seconds but struggled to get off a good shot to tie the contest.
Ortega scored 11 points to pace the Pirates, who are 9-6 overall. Phoenix returns to action Tuesday, hosting Hidden Valley.
