It was a tale of two halves for the Phoenix boys' basketball team on Friday night.
After putting together one of its best two-quarter stretches of the season, the Pirates hit a cold patch at the wrong time. Meanwhile, host Klamath Union heated up when it needed to on the way to a 67-60 Skyline Conference win at Pel Court in Klamath Falls.
Phoenix led 36-31 at the break before being outscored 36-24 in the second half. Neco Ortega led the first-half surge on his way to a game-high 22 points. The junior guard connected seven times from three-point range on the night. KU's Gabe Napoli-Sorg countered with six threes of his own, including several down the stretch when the Pelicans put the game away.
Ethan Hutsell added 17 points for Phoenix (9-9 overall, 0-4 in the conference) for the Pirates, who return to action Friday when they host Hidden Valley.
