The Phoenix boys' basketball team brought pressure in waves on Friday night.
Using a 15-man rotation, the Pirates bounced back from a slow start to post an impressive 66-62 win over visiting Klamath Union in a Skyline Conference game. The contest was the final at home for the PHS seniors.
It looked like that Senior Night might be a disappointment as Phoenix trailed 19-8 after a quarter. The middle quarters again proved to the charm for the Pirates, with their unrelenting pressure starting to take a toll on KU. Phoenix scored a combined 44 points in the second and third quarters, including a buzzer-beating 12-foot jumper by sophomore Alex Osorio to end the third quarter.
Ten Pirates scored in the game, including a game-high 19 points by Ethan Hutsell. Braeden Watts added 14 points and Neco Ortega 11 as the Pirates hit 11 times from three-point range in the game. Senior Mason Stella knocked down two free throws with nine seconds left to secure the win.
Phoenix (12-11 overall, 3-6 in the Skyline) will gun for a winning record when it closes the season Tuesday night at Hidden Valley.
