The Phoenix boys' basketball team made hay from the free throw line and earned its third straight Skyline Conference win in the process.
The Pirates hit 36 of 51 free throws on the way to a 68-52 win over Mazama on Friday night. PHS improved to 3-0 in the Skyline and 10-6 overall in the process.
Neco Ortega opened the game by hitting a pair of free throws for a pre-game technical foul on Mazama and the Pirates never stopped going to the line from there. Ortega led all scorers w ith 20 points while Braeden Watts scored 16, Ethan Hutsell 15 and AJ Stanfield eight.
Phoenix led 31-26 at halftime before outscoring Mazama 37-26 in the second half to pull away.
The Pirates are back at home on Tuesday, hosting Klamath Union in a battle for the conference lead.
