A third-quarter rally couldn't overcome a slow start for the Phoenix boys' basketball team on Tuesday night.
The Pirates erased most of a 15-point halftime deficit at Mazama before running out of steam in a 53-37 loss to the Vikings in Klamath Falls.
Miguel Valadez scored all of his team-high 13 points during the third quarter when Phoenix outsocred Mazama 15-4. The Vikings countered with a 16-4 scoring run in the final quarter to put the game away.
Phoenix (2-4 in the Skyline Conference and 7-12 overall) returns to action Friday when it hosts Klamath Union.
