The Phoenix boys' basketball team did the little things needed to get a big basketball win on Friday night.
And the Pirates needed absolutely everything in a thrilling 53-51 Skyline Conference win over Hidden Valley.
Phoenix took care of the ball throughout the contest, committing a season-low six turnovers. The Pirates also kept the athletic Mustangs from offensive rebounds, giving up just eight in the game. They also got defensive stops when they needed, rallying from a nine-point third-quarter deficit to claim their first Skyline win of the season.
Phoenix (1-2 in the Skyline, 8-9 overall) found itself in trouble early in the second half as visiting Hidden Valley expanded a six-point halftime lead to nine. That's when Isiah Talbott and Julius Bolstad took charge. The senior duo combined for 12 third-quarter points, including a trio of three-point baskets as Phoenix outscored Hidden Valley 19-8 to take a 38-33 lead. Classmate Jenner Selden came off the bench to hand out four assists in the quarter.
The final quarter was Dylan Harper's time as the junior swingman scored eight of his game-high 17 points. Vincent Ponce, also a junior, connected on a big three-point basket as Phoenix seemingly took charge of the game.
Hidden Valley put together a final rally and had several chances to tie the game but Phoenix came up big defensively to close out the game. A Bolstad rebound in heavy traffic closed out the win in the final seconds. Harper finished with seven rebounds on the night while Bolstad added six. Bolstad added 12 points on the night.
Ranked 25th in the state, the Pirates travel to league-leading Henley on Friday night.
