A long, lanky and talented Marist team was too much for the Phoenix boys' basketball team in the first round of the state playoffs.
Appearing in the 4A Round of 16 for the first time since 2020, the Pirates were outscored 35-8 over the second and third quarters in a 59-30 loss to the Spartans in Eugene on March 1.
Phoenix (which ended the season 16-7) got a strong start from Robin Trenbeath, as the senior guard scored all of his team's points in the first quarter. From there, Marist took charge and never looked back to advance to the OSAA State Tournament in Forest Grove this week.
Dylan Harper added seven points and Brayden Decker five for Phoenix.
