A late goal couldn't dampen a great start to the season for the Phoenix boys' soccer team.
After leading for the majority of the match, the Pirates finished in a 1-1 tie after host Molalla on Saturday afternoon. PHS led from the 20th minute thanks to a goal by Gustavo Pinon off a sweet pass from Ramon Rivera.
Molalla, which defeated the Pirates in the state quarterfinals last fall, managed a goal off a header in the final two minutes of the match.
Defensively, PHS got strong efforts from Joe Navas, Randy Rodriguez and goalie Giovanni Cook.
Phoenix returns to action Tuesday, hosting Brookings at Colver Field.
