After a pair of ties, it was time for the Phoenix boys' soccer team to find a way to win a match.
Thanks for Kassem Akil, the Pirates did just that, edging Hidden Valley 2-1 in a tightly-contested Skyline Conference match in Murphy on Monday afternoon.
Trailing 1-0 at halftime, the Pirates tied the game when Akil's corner kick found Tyler Clayton, who converted a header from six yards out in the 56th minute. With the prospect of another tie looming, Phoenix took the lead in the 72nd minute when Akil took a pass from Bryson Flenner to convert in the 72nd minute.
Joe Navas anchored the defensive effort for the Pirates, who will be home to host North Valley on Thursday at Colver Fields.
